Prof. Dr. Ing. Jochen Hack was convenor of the Special Session “Nature-based Solutions for Cities and Urban Watersheds” and started the session with a presentation summarizing the main results of the SEE-URBAN-WATER (SUW) project and lessons learned for Nature-based Solutions (NbS) in urban watersheds. Eight other presentations with examples of Nature-based Solutions in urban context in the USA, Spain, Colombia, Italy, and China as well as the presentation of Ing. Ricardo Bonilla (SUW, Costa Rica) entitled “Integrated development of nature-based solutions for tropical urban watershed restoration” complement the session. Ricardo Bonilla presented an integral methodology of different placement strategies of NbS previously tested in the the SEE-URBAN-WATER project but so far considered independently. The methodology is based on the use of available urban space considering different spatial characteristics to harness social, ecological, economic, political and hydrological benefits related to implementation of these structures. More than 40 persons attended the session and contributed to its success. The congress was also an opportunity to meet with other colleagues and project partners of SEE-URABN-WATER from Costa Rica.
